Adults need a wide range of nutrients to lead a healthy and active life. The required nutrients for different physiological groups can only be derived from a well-balanced diet. Our body needs nutrients for maintenance of constant body weight and or ensuring proper body function. Absence of a well-balanced diet can lead to gaps in nutrition.
Gaps in Adult Nutrition
Limited availability of vitamins and minerals (micronutrients) from diet may result into gaps in nutrition.
Our body may not always completely utilize nutrition from the food consumed. Inadequate consumption of vitamins and minerals may result in deficiencies with no visible symptoms, affecting health in the long-term. Multiple factors determine the availability of vitamins and minerals from the diet.
- Vitamin B-complex, Vitamin C and Vitamin A are commonly lost during cooking and processing of food
- Calcium, Iron and Zinc are not completely absorbed by the body after ingestion, and so only a fraction of what is ingested is available for utilization
Healthy Immune Function
Friendly bacteria present in the intestines improve immunity. Human gut is home to about 10 good bacteria, which help maintain healthy immune function[7,8] of our body.
Good bacteria present in the human intestines provide protection against disease causing microorganisms
- By not allowing them to multiply and grow in number
- By consuming their share of nutrition (nutrient competition)
- By production of factors that fight these microorganisms .
